Let's Jump Into The Unknown!

Hello everyone!

Do you know Simile? No? Well, Simile is a literary magazine made entirely by students at the university. It consists of everything you can possibly think of: prose, poetry, fiction, non-fiction, and even drawings. Every year, the magazine revolves around a theme, and this year it will be “the unknown”. Simile is now looking for submissions for this year's issue so Creative Writing Group decided to help students get started at a special edition meeting.

We started the meeting with the story cubes. Aline divided the whole group in pairs and gave each one three cubes. The exercise was to write a little story using the following prompt, and the cubes of course:

You are at home when you suddenly hear a strange noise coming from outside. You look out the window, what do you see?

As usual, some of the results were so weird, we could only laugh. The second activity involved a little name bag, which includes the names of fictional characters, but also real names, such as “Aline in a bad mood” and “Cara from Simile” - because why not. Each writer received two names, for example I had Barack Obama and Dr Frankenstein. Our task was to write a story combining the two names. Afterwards, the other people had to guess who we had drawn. Let's just say some stories were ... memorable.

The meeting ended as usual with a bit of poetry. Laurence had chosen a few poems, which all talked about death from a different perspective: death as a mystery, death as an escape, etc. After a brief discussion, Laurence invited us to write (or draw) something about one of those perspectives, even though we had already used all our inspiration for that evening.

If you would like to submit a piece for Simile or have any questions, do not hesitate to have a look at the Facebook page or send an email to similemagazine@gmail.com. The next Creative Writing meeting will be a Christmas edition by the way!

Until then,

Cara

CWG: Christmas Edition

Dear fellow writers,

Creative Writing Group could not resist giving into the Christmas vibe this year, and we decided to theme our last meeting of the year around it. Who can say no to a creative writing Christmas party, after all?

In this meeting, we will again use our theme as an inspiration to write, but there will be a lot more to it than just that. I'm talking real Christmas party stuff. For one, we will be meeting in the Mayana chocolate bar instead of in Blandijn (it's right across the school, you can't miss it. If you can, feel free to message me (Aline) and I will be waiting for you at Blandijn). However, we do not want to spoil the rest of the surprises just yet!

We do ask you to let us know if you are coming via this event or in person, because we will probably try and make a reservation in the chocolate bar. Besides that, there's also a dress code: ugly (Christmas) sweaters! A winner will be chosen by the end of the meeting.

We hope to see you there,
Aline, Cara & Laurence

Sunday Writing Prompt 27/11/16

#SundayWritingPrompt 🌨 Walking your dog (or cat or goldfish) on a chilly Sunday evening, you run into a strange person. The person talks to you in a language you do not understand, waving their hands in the air like crazy. Not really sure what to do, you decide to follow them. Where does this person take you?

CWG: Simile Edition

Dear fellow writers,

Tomorrow we are meeting once again, in the Big Meeting room in Blandijn, from 19:00 until 21:00. This time, the theme will be based completely on our dearest student literary magazine, Simile. During the meeting we will do several creative writing exercises using Simile’s theme (the unknown) to inspire your minds, and hopefully you will come up with something to send in for this year’s Simile edition.

On a side note, this CWG meeting also includes visual art – so if you are into that, you are more than welcome too. (To be fair, you always are, but this time especially.)

For those of you who still haven’t figured out the labyrinth that is Blandijn:

1.       Enter Blandijn via TraBla (the main entrance, right across of Sint Pietersplein).

2.       Then turn to the left and walk straight forward, into the little corridor which houses the trajectbegeleiders. Go through the big door at the end of the corridor, and you should find a staircase.

3.       Walk up the staircase until you reach the third floor.

4.       Turn right, facing the English corridor.

5.       The Big Meeting Room should be the first door on your left.

On top of that, make sure to like and share our Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/CreativeWritingUGent) on which I will be posting regular updates as to when the meetings are. To stay in the theme, feel free to check out Simile’s Facebook page too: https://www.facebook.com/similemagazine/.

If you still have any questions, feel free to mail me. If you would like to stop receiving these mails, just let me know and I will take you off the mailing list.

We look forward to seeing you tomorrow!

Sunday Writing Prompt 20/11/16

#SundayWritingPrompt on a Monday because why the hell not.
If you could start any kind of club/group, what kind would it be? What activities would you do? Would you dress/act a certain way? Would their be a test to pass before you can join the club/group?

Creative Writing Group: Game Edition

To the people who thought Creative Writing Group is boring, you are wrong. We had fun at the Game edition! After giving feedback to my (Cara's) text, we started by playing with story cubes. For people who do not know what cubes I am talking about, they are little dices which have strange images on them. You roll them, try to interpret the images and then let your imagination run wild. The stories that come out of this game are often quite silly, because life is a lot easier with a sense of humor.

For this game, we were divided into two groups. Each group received a set of cubes and had to write a little story together. Each group member had to roll the dice, write a sentence and then pass everything on to the next group member. These were the results:

Once upon a time, there was an airplane. On the plane, there were sheep. One of these sheep was busy reading. Then a turtle stabbed its eye. So the other sheep came and locked the turtle up.

One day at the beach, there was a tent where Harry Potter was fighting a mean old dragon. In the background, an evil emoji was humming the Harry Potter theme song to set the mood. The dragon was very tired, so he drank some water from a kettle, not knowing there was a potion inside that would turn him into a giant.

After the story cubes, it was time to bring out Cards Against Humanity. The rules are simple. This awkward game consists of black and white cards with short sentences or expressions on them. Each player gets five white cards. The game starts when a player pulls out a black card, the other players then have to choose from their white cards which one (or two, depending on what the black card says) would fit best with it. After this, the leading player reads all the answers out loud and chooses the best combination of black and white cards. The player who created that combination gets a point. We did two full rounds and had trouble keeping calm sometimes.

When we had recovered from all the laughter, we all wrote a little story about one of our winning combinations. It was time for the last part of our meeting: talking about poetry. We took turns reading a stanza from Among School Children by William Butler Yeats, and discussed it briefly. We actually ended up talking about its presence or absence in our English literature courses. Although, the discussion was heated when the subject of Bob Dylan and Nobel Prize came up. Poetry is not our strong suit, but we are working on it!

The next meeting is 22 november. Save the date! Aline, Laurence and I look forward to seeing you all there!

Until then!

Sunday Writing Prompt 06/11/16

When walking home from the library after a tiring day of studying one evening, you find a phone. You cannot seem to turn it on, so you decide to put it in your bag and return it to the library's lost & found section the next day. However, as you are waiting for your bus, it rings. Who's calling? 📞

Feel free to send in your work to creativewritingugent@gmail.com!

Sunday Writing Prompt 30/10/16

HALLOWEEN WEEKEND! 🎃👻

Take one of your closest friends and put them in the scariest scenario you can think of. Try to characterise them indirectly, by writing about how they respond to the situation, how they solve it, what other ideas or thoughts they come up with, etc.
